Tiburon Desert Sheep Hunts
This Tiburon Desert Sheep hunt is exclusive to Tiburon Island, Mexico. These rams are much darker in color and can have bigger horns than the other Desert Sheep found on the mainland. We offer a very limited amount of clientele for these Desert Sheep hunts; only 10-12 permits are issued yearly. This allows the hunter to have a better chance of harvesting their trophy Tiburon Island Desert Sheep. We suggest having a good set of optics and hiring a packer if you need assistance because a hunt like this will require lots of backpacking and hiking. We can assist you in hiring a packer.
Guided Tiburon Desert Bighorn Hunt
Tiburon Desert Bighorns are known to be very difficult to spot, which is why patience is critical when it comes to searching for a mature Desert Sheep. The island's terrain is 75% mountain ranges, made up of vast and sharply etched desert peaks that can be intimidating.
A typical day of hunting will involve hiking and glassing from different vantage points. Rams can be found alone or in larger bands of 5 or more sheep. On average, hunters can expect to see 10-20+ sheep between the rams, ewes, and lambs.
Tiburon Sheep Hunting Expectations
Hunting Desert Sheep on Tiburon Island is no easy task. Hunting days will require hunters to be fit, as there are few roads on the island, and all gear needs to be backpacked into camp. You can expect to travel 2-5 miles into an area with no roads to where you'll start the hunt.
Throughout the hunt, most hunters will pass up a number of rams because the sheep density is strong on the island. This offers hunters the opportunity to harvest a true trophy ram on Tiburon Island. Mature rams around 170" with multiple rams of 180" are taken each season.
Tiburon Desert Sheep Hunting Terrain
Tiburon Island is roughly 25 x 50 kilometers and is made up of 75% mountainous habitat. The island sits between the eastern shore of the Gulf of California and the mainland of Mexico. You can expect this Desert Sheep hunt to require moderate exertion since there are very few roads on the island where you can get around. All water, food, and supplies will need to be backpacked in. This is a truly unique hunt because Tiburon Island Desert Sheep are typically bigger than any other Desert Sheep, although it may require more effort to harvest an old mature ram.
Getting to Tiburon Island
All flights will need to be booked with Hermosillo, Mexico, as your final destination. Due to the laws pertaining to firearms in Mexico, hunters bringing their rifles will need to fly directly from Phoenix to Hermosillo with no connections anywhere in Mexico. Hermosillo is where your rifle permit will be located upon entry into the country. Upon your arrival, you will need to check your rifle; we handle all gun permits prior to your arrival, along with notifying Mexico customs of your necessary permits. Once you've cleared security, a DSO employee will greet you. The time of arrival will determine whether you depart for camp immediately by crossing the Sea of Cortez from a village named Punta Chueca to Tiburon Island, which takes about 10-20 minutes, or if you depart first thing the following morning.
